Effect of size press coating of cationic starch/ nanofibrillated cellulose on physical and mechanical properties of recycled papersheets

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of size press coating on two types recycled papers using different nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and cationic starch (CS) physical mechanical properties. Wheat straw was used as a source, NFC obtained through oxidative enzymatic pretreatments. Recycled fluting coreboard were coated with starch/NFC blends at various concentrations (0.5%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%) three-time repetitive application, followed by one-time drying section, compared uncoated papers. The application suspension containing 4% periodate-oxidized both paper surfaces resulted in significant improvement tensile index, burst internal bond strength papersheets, increases up 60.6%, 96.3%, 119.9%, respectively. Furthermore, decreases air permeability also observed reductions 75% 81.6% for papers, Compared other pretreatment methods, periodate oxidation higher viscosity values samples.
